The forecast today...
Imagine you've been planning your session and have it booked with your favorite photographer and the day comes only to find out that it's an extremely windy day! In fact, the tree in your yard was just pulled out of the ground by the wind! This is indeed a true story for me. I hardly ever get professional photos done but I booked with a local photographer and I was so excited to get photos with my girls that I almost cried when I saw the wind! It even took out my backyard tree! I contacted my photographer to see if we needed to reschedule because of the wind, but she's a pro and said we will work with it! That's what great photographers do! Sometimes, when schedules don't allow for rescheduling we just have to go with what the weather brings us and do our best! I knew immediately that my hair would not behave in the wind so I ended up not putting any effort into it but instead tried to do both my daughters' hair in a way to minimize crazy hair. We wore longer dresses or shorts under our dresses to prevent unwanted exposure. And lastly, we just embraced the wild wind, because at the end of the day, it's about capturing moments and times in our lives that we wish to revisit in the future. The photos might not be perfect, but they're perfect to me because my arms are full hugging my girls!
So to recap my tips
- Think about your wardrobe and how it will withstand the wind. Wear shorts, or a longer dress. If you're wearing a shirt, consider wearing an undershirt in case the top shirt is loose and blows in the wind!
- Don't worry too much about your hair, the wind will have it's way with it! If you want to minimize movement in your hair, think about braiding it, anything loose will tend to fall out and will get in your eyes. If you're ok with that, I actually love how wind moves hair and can add to your photos!
- If it's truly too windy and we're both available to reschedule, just ask! If our session is on the beach it might be for the best, as on extremely windy days we might get sand blasted!
- If you're still up for a windy day session, embrace the chaos! Fighting it only distracts from our time together. I'll pose you in ways to keep the wind from blowing into your face the best that I can and if possible, find a few locations that minimize the wind.
