Birth

I know as a mom, expecting my babies, each time was special and filled with awe and wonder mixed with some fear. I had no idea what to do or if I was doing anything right. Back in my pregnancy days, maternity photography wasn't much of a thing and I had no idea that birth photography even existed! By the time my second baby came along, I did however know about newborn photography and I wanted photos of my new baby! At the time I was just learning on my little digital camera and knew it wasn't coming out right so I asked a friend to capture some photos and I'm so glad I did, I love those photos!

Because of the nature of the arrival of a baby being somewhat unpredictable, I know it's important to stay flexible. Whether you want newborn photos, birth photos, or fresh 48 photos, there is no set date for these but instead I set a window of time aside and keep my availability open. How to know which session is right for you really depends on your style, your comfort level, and your vision of what you want captured.

• The Newborn Portrait Session is a block of 2 hours set aside to capture photos of your newborn and your family in the comfort of your home when your baby is between 2-10 days old. The reason for this window is primarily because this is when the baby still has many of the newborn traits, the baby fuzz, baby reflexes, they still are curled up most of the time, and they sleep well! I like offering 2 hours of time in case baby needs to eat, be cuddled, or have a diaper change. Babies are unpredictable and as much as we can do to prepare we just never know what might happen.
• The Birth Story is just that, it's coverage of your baby's birth. Whether you're birthing at home or at the hospital, you want to document the active moments of labor and the delivery of your baby. This can be as much detail as you want, which we can talk more about in person. These moments are raw and real and the look on your face as you see your new baby is forever captured. Birth can be quick or can last a long time. Personally, I was in labor for over 24 hrs. This is why I focus my attention to the last part of labor and delivery, so communication is key. I'm on call for your birth once you are 38 weeks until after your baby arrives.
• Fresh 48 refers to the first 48 hours of the birth of your baby. This is a happy medium between the two previous mentioned sessions. This session captures many of those birth type moments, first few feedings, diaper changes, seeing family for the first time, but without the documentary photos of the birth. If you're in the hospital, I arrive at the hospital when you are ready for me so that I can get newborn portraits. Many families choose to have the moment captured when other family members are arrive, meeting the new baby for the first time. If you deliver at home, most likely other family members have already met the new baby but it is still full of sweet moments. This session typically lasts roughly an hour.
